Why the name "Omega Roll"

Why the name "Omega Roll"

Ω 🎲 Omega Roll 🎲 Ω

Kind of a cool name for a store, eh?

It is spelled right there in the name that the store is dice related; there is more to it! As a storyteller, I feel obligated to give you more than just a straight forward store name such as "I really like dice" or "Dice Store".

The name "Omega Roll" is telling you a history.

The word "Omega" has a lot of weight on its own, there is a certain ancient mystique about it. There is a lot of knowledge associated with the Omega, from mathematics, physics and philosophy, all the way to chemistry, biology and sociology, a lot of sciences use this symbol to identify concepts with precision and share meaningful information. It even has different meanings inside the same areas of study if it presents itself as a capital case omega (Ω) or a lowercase omega (ω).

Beyond the powerful sound of the word Omega and the cool looking Greek alphabet letters associated with it, there is a personal reason I chose this name for the store: being the last word in the Greek alphabet, the Omega is associated with the end of things, a final sentence, an inescapable resolution. Omega represents the ultimate and insuperable achievement, as it represents the conclusion of time itself. There is no alternative to the Omega.

Almost everyone knows the phrase "The Alpha and The Omega" to represent the beginning, the end, and all in between. The Alpha being a symbol for the creation, the possibilities to unveil, the source material, the source power. The Omega being the certainty in an outcome, the unavoidable effects of time, the permanent consequence, the completion of a cycle.

When people discuss complex subjects like life and death, deities, they inevitably have to touch on those concepts and define what is the Alpha and the Omega: What are the possibilities and what indicates closure. What are the facts and what is the verdict.

You probably don't word things that way when discussing with your peers, friends (or foes) and family, but I don't have to describe how important it is to have a definitive set of rules and a universally accepted final outcome when playing games, for example. We all know that a die roll is to be accepted as the judgment of fate, as long as the rules are clearly set beforehand.

While the Alpha is whole magical concept by itself, and powering the creation is a vital necessity for any sort of game, it is the Omega that really fascinates me. The certainties are as significant to a game or a story, as are the possibilities at hand. Meaning that the result of a die roll should be impactful and undeniable, that number represent a fruit you picked from all the possible branches.

For gaming and storytelling, it pleases me to yield the control of outcomes to an external force, because then I have to deal with the aftereffect, which is where all the fun comes from and the most creative ideas can blossom. Just like in sports, the limitations for games and storytelling are what bring value to the achievements, as certain things depend on what you can do while other things depend on what you can't do.

The dice have the final say in certain aspects of my storytelling. The dice are my Omega.

I create stories all the time, it is my thing. At certain key moments of the creation process, I like challenging myself into testing new directions (or confirming current ones), and the way I do it is by setting a few rules before rolling a die, then accepting the results based on the set rules. Those rules could be simple as odd vs even to decide the fate of a character, or they could involve various scenarios that could steer the story in one of many unique, multiple directions.

I like bringing that aspect of uncertainty/certainty within possibilities when I am telling a story; I don't care solely to create stories around what I wanted to happen, I also let the story take its own course. I take the rolled results as the absolute and definitive outcome;  It is interesting that one definitive end opens up for a lot of new beginnings going forward.

Disputing rolled results are not something I care for, nor something that I want to do, because if I do that, then I miss the opportunity of challenging my storytelling skills. Sometimes I have to put great ideas on the shelf, because some unexpected direction took over my story; that just makes me better and better at creating new sets of possibilities to play with. No creation is truly lost, it just feeds the new chapter.

There is great value in redirecting plans when reality strikes us with an unexpected roll. I took my storytelling approach to my daily life, and it helped me distinguish between the facts that I can do something about and the ones that I can't do anything about. Sometimes life rolls you awful dice, in other times you get a pretty fortunate roll, either way you have to deal with that particular result as it is.

So there it is! The name Omega Roll is a homage to all those humbling and challenging Omega rolls that made me a better storyteller, as well as a grateful nod to all the humbling and challenging Omega rolls that life dealt me, driving me to try and be a better person, as well as accept the limitations as part of my path through growth opportunities.

Now, for your own wellbeing and future happiness, I suggest accepting this Omega fact:
